Graceland the Tour

As the shuttle drops you off at the top of the sweeping driveway, you are impressed by the entry with the towering columns in true southern mansion style.

You enter the hall with a staircase leading upstairs to Elvis’ private suites, which, unfortunately are closed to the public.

But the rest of the house offers so many insights into how the King lived, it is well worth the tour. The ground floor has a reception room and music room (see photo) where Elvis entertained guests, the kitchen and dining room, and his parents’ bedroom, which has a portrait of their son adorning the wall. Once in the house you can take the tour at your own pace following the prompts on the headphones to start the commentary on the room you are viewing.

The tour then heads you down to the basement which houses the bar and billiard room and TV room. It is rumoured that Elvis saw that the President had three televisions in his office, so he could watch what was happening on each of the three networks at the same time, so Elvis had three TV sets mounted on the wall of the TV room so he could do the same.

After the basement tour the group is guided to the Jungle Room (see photo), which Elvis themed on his love for all things Hawaiian. It was here you were invited if you were close to the King and said to be was Elvis’ favourite room of the house. It is the room which where you feel that Elvis would be most relaxed in.

Moving outside to the expansive gardens you are guided to Elvis’ racquetball court which he had built after he purchased the property, and which now is the trophy room housing hundreds of gold and platinum records, other awards and many of his signature jumpsuits which he wore during the Las Vegas era.

Finally the tour moves towards the pool and the Meditation Gardens where the graves of Elvis, his parents and grandmother lie.

A truly engaging tour and one not to miss for any Elvis fan.

Next Month: Joe Kent, Elvis impersonator.
